Therapists for college students near New York, NY
Many of the college students I work with feel overwhelmed trying to balance everything—school, relationships, family expectations, and figuring out what they want for their future. They might struggle with anxiety, self-doubt, burnout, or just feel stuck. Some are navigating big transitions like moving away from home, managing independence, or exploring their identity. I work best with students who are open to talking things through honestly, even if they’re not exactly sure where to start. Together, we’ll work to understand what’s getting in the way, build coping tools, and help you feel more grounded, confident, and in control of your life.
Hello! I am a licensed clinical therapist with over 8 years of counseling experience. My expertise lies in helping people achieve their goals of stress reduction, improved coping skills, communication, and self-esteem. My eclectic approach includes extensive knowledge in cognitive behavioral, client-centered, and trauma-informed therapy modalities. As an Afro-Latina myself, I know that having a culturally-sensitive therapist is very important to ensure that clients feel heard and supported in sessions. I believe in creating a space of acceptance and unconditional positive regard in order to foster self-acceptance and healing. My therapeutic style is warm, supportive, and nonjudgmental. I am a firm believer in starting where you are at and establishing a strong therapeutic relationship to achieve your goals. I will tailor my therapeutic style to your needs as I gain a deeper understanding of your concerns and goals. I prefer to work with patients that are open to becoming more self-aware and learn coping skills to manage their mental health. In our first session, I will establish a therapeutic working relationship with you and ask you what brings you in to counseling. If you think we might be a good fit, please reach out! I am part of the Path referral network, which means that when you reach out, my team will get back to you quickly to schedule our first session. I am committed to making therapy affordable. Through Path, I am in-network for most commercial insurances, so you're only responsible for your co-pay!
About Me: Hello, I'm Nhi, a dedicated first-generation social work intern in my second year at Columbia University's School of Social Work. I hold a B.A. in Psychology from Grinnell College and bring a deeply personal understanding of mental health challenges shaped by my own experiences as an Asian American in foster care. My journey has been profoundly influenced by the intersection of intergenerational trauma, immigration, and systemic inequalities, providing me with a unique perspective on the complexities of healing and resilience. My Approach: I believe that trauma and mental health struggles do not exist in a vacuum—they are often reflections of broader societal issues. Growing up in a family affected by intergenerational trauma, poverty, and systemic discrimination, I understand firsthand the cascading effects these forces can have on a person's mental and emotional well-being, even into adulthood. This insight drives my therapeutic approach, where I aim to provide a compassionate, culturally sensitive space for clients to explore their experiences and find healing. I bring extensive experience working with diverse populations and complex trauma. During my time as a case manager at a domestic violence shelter, I supported individuals and families from all walks of life, many of whom were dealing with overlapping traumas, including domestic violence, mental health struggles, homelessness, childhood trauma, and identity-based discrimination. This experience reinforced my belief that trauma and mental health challenges are often intertwined with larger societal issues. Mental health challenges can significantly impact daily functioning, even long after the precipitating events have occurred. In some cases, there may be no clear cause, yet the impact is still profound. Regardless of the situation, everyone deserves support in their healing journey. In my practice, I adopt a flexible, client-centered approach, tailoring my methods to meet each individual's unique needs and strengths. I utilize a range of therapeutic techniques, including trauma-informed therapy, person-centered therapy, motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). I believe every person has the inherent capacity to navigate their challenges, and my role is to support, empower, and provide tools for their journey toward healing. What to Expect: In our work together, you can expect a supportive, non-judgmental environment where your experiences are honored, and your voice is central to the healing process. I am committed to understanding your story in its full context, recognizing the multiple layers of identity and experience that shape who you are. Whether you're dealing with personal trauma, managing day-to-day stressors, or seeking a deeper understanding of yourself, I'm here to walk alongside you, providing the guidance and support you need.
