I help with chronic anxiety, relationships, trauma, work-situations, family dynamics, and general day-to-day coping. I help you find solutions to what brings you to therapy in the context of your unique life experiences. Together, we utilize solution-focused and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to accomplish your goals and help catalyze change in your life. We investigate how your thoughts impact your emotions and situations, then identify new ways of responding that serve you better. I also offer support to those with chronic or other illness in their life . Sometimes talking with somebody solely dedicated to your personal growth and well-being makes all the difference. I believe that the client is the expert of their lived experience. I will partner with you to explore a variety of issues that may be holding you back from wellbeing and peace. I am a licensed social worker with experience providing individual therapy to adults who are looking to makes changes in their life. I believe therapy is a useful tool to learn new ways of coping with challenges and to gain insight into our self, our relationships, and life experiences that shape who we are as people and how we live our lives. My current practice has been focused working with those experiencing anxiety and/or depression and coping with difficult challenges in life, such as life transitions, career concerns, family conflicts, or relationship stress. I am trained in a variety of modalities (CBT, DBT, Solution Focused, Relational therapy). I have worked as a clinician in both inpatient and outpatient settings at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. I also have extensive experience working with neurological illness, chronic medical illness, and caregivers. My style is warm, interactive, and direct and I incorporate a variety of techniques into my approach. I feel it is a privilege to be let into the lives of my clients and I take a collaborative approach to my work. I have been a licensed clinical psychologist since 1993 and have extensive I experience treating undergraduate and graduate students from Boston area universities for anxiety, depression, relationship, and eating-disorder issues. My therapeutic approach is broadly psychodynamic (focusing on thoughts and emotions) but with an active, problem-solving style. I see my clients both in-person and virtually by telehealth.

I help college students: -stop obsessing about food, their body image, or what they're eating -let go of chronic worrying and find stillness in amidst busy lives -manage their stress so that students can stay on top of all their demands -feel more in control by better organizing their time and building routine (less doom scrolling!) -feel more authentic navigating new-found independence (particularly among societal or familial pressures!) I graduated from UMass Medical school and was trained in adult psychiatry at Cambridge Health Alliance, a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital. Prior to going to medical school I received a Masters in Teaching from Boston University and worked as a teacher. This unique background affects my approach to psychiatry. I believe that a good psychiatrist should work with you to help you learn about yourself and your mental health. I am trained in a variety of therapeutic styles including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), psychodynamic therapy, supportive therapy, and Gottman style couples/relationship therapy. During my time at CHA I worked extensively with the Gender and Sexuality Clinic to serve patients of diverse sexual and gender identities. I also co-lead a group therapy for individuals in polyamorous and non-monogamous relationships. I have taught at the American Psychiatric Association’s specialized rotation for HIV Psychiatry, including lectures on how to provide effective telepsychiatry, and I have presented at a national meeting on teaching providers how to better work with patients to prescribe medications. I am a licensed physician in Massachusetts, New York, and California. I offer in person appointments in Somerville, MA as well as secure telehealth appointments to those residing in Massachusetts, New York, and California. In addition to medication management I offer individual and relationship/couples therapy.

I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. What often brings us to therapy are life events that we did not sign up for or want to face. Unanticipated endings, dealing with uncertainties and fear can bring us to crossroads. These intersections present an opportunity for our hearts to grow and for our lives to align with our true north. there are a number of credentials i could share about myself and ways you might decide if i'm the right therapist for you, but honestly, between you and me, what matters is that i love this work and i believe in this work. i feel deeply humbled to hold people's stories and hearts for a living. the trust that this work requires is no small thing, and i never take that lightly. in my clinical practice, i use theories rooted in an anti-racist, queer liberation, harm reduction, and body-neutral framework. i feel most drawn to this work through an attachment-focused analytical frame. we have all been harmed in relationships, and i believe our healing must also exist in relationships. i know we cannot look at one's personal frame without understanding the systemic and cultural impact that intersectionality has had on one's own experience. i have committed to my clinical work always evolving, and we will both teach each other what comes next. i can't promise a safe place, but i can promise an accountable one. i will create the container, i will show up for rupture, and together we will build a foundation of trust to help you heal, grow, challenge, and shift the things that brought you here. i received my master's in clinical social work from silberman school of social work at hunter college in new york city. after graduation, i worked in community mental health, supporting young mothers on their journey towards recovery from opioid-based addictions. i then joined a group practice where i've worked for many years, supporting folks to heal complicated relationships with food, their bodies, their boundaries, their gender, and their sexuality. i believe i am a partner in this work with you, and as people change, heal, and move forward in their lives, i feel profoundly impacted to bear witness and be a part of your story. it is miraculous. finding the right therapist is a process: trust yourself, explore, ask hard questions. we work for you and with you. i am a white, queer, abolitionist, non-binary, dyslexic, jewish, body-liberatory therapist, and most importantly, a client. the only thing i ask of the folks i work with is a commitment to show up, and the rest we will figure out together.

Dr Alex MacNeil, LLC is a private practice based out of Arlington, MA that aims to help individuals and families foster healthy behaviors and relationships. Dr. MacNeil treats adults facing a variety of issues including stress and anxiety, mild-depression, and life-adjustment issues. Dr. MacNeil also specializes in helping men work through work, school, and relationship issues. He engages in both individual and family therapy, depending on the client’s needs, and conducts therapy either in-person or via telehealth.
